Anthony Ojonimi Onoja, is the President of Agricultural Policy Research Network (APRNet). Prof. Onoja is a Full Professor of Agricultural Economics (Resource and Environmental Economist) at the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria and a Professor Extraordinarius at the Department of Agriculture and Animal Health in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, University of South Africa, Johannesburg Campus. He is also the Director, Institute of Agricultural Research and Development (IARD), University of Port Harcourt. He serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Natural Resource Environment and Sustainable Development (INRES) and an Associate Fellow at the Centre for Marine Pollution Monitoring and Seafood Safety (CEMPOS).both at University of Port Harcourt. Prof. Onoja collaborates with the Resource and Environmental Policy Research Centre (REPRC), University of Nigeria Nsukka as an Associate Research Fellow, a Centre funded by Environment for Development (EfD: https://efdinitiative.org/nigeria ), University of Gothenborg, Sweden. He obtained a PhD in Agricultural Economics (Resource and Environmental Economics option) from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 2015. He was a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of South Africa, Johannesburg from May-August 2018; and has participated in external assessments for promotion at University of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Malawi. He had been an external assessor for PhD and M.Sc candidates at University of South Africa since 2016 and has successfully supervised 5 PhDs and 4 M.Sc graduates from diverse universities including UNIPORT, Royal Roads University, Canada and Lilongwe University of Agriculture And Natural Resources, Malawi. He was an Executive Board Member (West African Regional Representative) of the African Association of Agricultural Economists (AAAE) 2018-2023. Prof. Onoja is highly experienced in facilitating stakeholders' meetings, workshops and seminars for policy making and has been involved in field research (both qualitative and quantitative) for over 22 years now. His expertise ranges from climate change studies including Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and vulnerability to climate change assessments; agricultural policy analysis, trade/macroeconomic policy, applied econometrics, sustainable agricultural livelihoods as well as agribusiness finance/project evaluation. He serves on the editorial boards of five reputable journals including Nigerian Agricultural Policy Research Journal, (NAPReJ), Agricultural Economics and Extension Studies (AGEERS), Journal of Agripreneurship and Sustainable Development (JASD); Open Access Journal of Agricultural Research (OJAR), and African Journal of Agricultural Technology and Environment (AJATE). A certified reviewer of various Journals, Prof. Onoja is widely published and well-traveled with over 100 peer reviewed publications in reputable journals, books, edited conference proceedings and book chapters. He has had several research presentations at the Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa (TRAPCA) in Arusha, Tanzania.  

 

He was appointed as an  Expert Reviewer of the Working Group I contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report and also a reviewer of some international research grants proposals. He had won scholarships, fellowships and research grants from various bodies (national and international) e.g. from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), TETFund (Nigeria), Global Development Network(GDN)/USAID, USAID/Michigan State University, IITA, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), Association of African Universities (AAU), SIDA & AGRIFOSE2030/University of Gothenburg. He is the team lead, Fishery and Aquaculture Policy Drafting Committee for Nigeria (2024-2028). He currently serves as University of Port Harcourt focal person in the consrotium EU-Scholarship and Intra-Africa mobility Project called CREATE GreenAfrica Project. A consultant to World Bank/Fadama programme and GTZ, he is also a recipient of an international mobility scholarship funded by the European Union in the Intra-ACP Academic Mobility Scheme, TRECCAFRICA (doing a PhD exchange in trans-disciplinary studies in climate change at Mekelle University, Ethiopia). He was a Mentor in the AWARDS First Cohort Mentoring programme (2023). He had twice won awards for outstanding contribution to research and development at University of Port Harcourt. In 2017 he was named City Law Review (CTLR) Researcher of the Year by an Abuja based Magazine with bias for public policy and law. In December, 2022 he received the award for Inspirational Leadership in recognition of professional leadership and motivation by Prof. Walter Ollor Foundation in Port Harcourt. He is a member of International Association of Agricultural Economists, IAAE, African Association of Agricultural Economists, AAAE, Nigerian Association of Agricultural Economists, NAAE and Agricultural Policy Research Network (APRNet); Agriculture, Nutrition & Health (ANH) Academy and African Association of Resource and Environmental Economists (AFAERE).  He is conversant with the use of econometric and statistical software such as EViews, Frontier 4.1C, STATA, SPSS, MS Excel, Limpdep, R, Genstat, etc. and uses others GIS software such as Q GIS and DSSAT fairly. In 2023, Prof. Anthony Onoja was inducted as a Fellow, Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria (IELPN).
